This demand is met by heavy duty wheelchairs, commonly referred to as bariatric wheelchairs, which come in a variety of models and with weight capacities ranging from 400 to 1,000 pounds. The seat widths are up to 48 inches while depths can go up to 23 inches.

In general, heavy-duty wheelchairs come as mid-wheel and rear-wheel drive and offer a similar range of options as regular power wheelchairs, with comparable electronics. However, they are built with larger frames and seats. The option for mid-wheel drive typically vanishes after the weight capacity exceeds 650 pounds.

The tradeoff is that the seats are heavier, and in most cases are not foldable, and heavy to transport. The motors are much heavier than those found in ordinary weight wheelchairs, and the frames are constructed of reinforced welds and heavy-duty steel tubing, with steel bars used for heavier models instead of tubing. The power needed to run the motors on these chairs necessitates the largest batteries available, adding even more weight to the seats.

1. Merits P183

The Travel Ease P183 from Merits is a folding electric wheelchair that can be used both indoors and outdoors. It has a weight capacity of 700 pounds and weighs 190 pounds.

It has a top speed of 4 mph, a maximum travel distance of 25 miles per charge and a turning radius of 37 inches. The armrests and footrests are adjustable. The footrests can be swung away, the leg rests elevated, and the battery tray can be folded to add more space.

It comes with a controller that can be programmed. The P183 is a rear-wheel drive and when folded it has an overall width of only 15-inches.

2. Merits P710

The Merits Atlantis powerchair is primarily made for plus-size patients and offers outstanding support and stability. It has four seat posts and a sturdy structure to increase longevity. The P710 has a weight capacity of 600 pounds and weighs 304 pounds.

It has a maximum speed of 5mph, a driving range of 30 miles, and a turning radius of 31.5 inches. It has a rear-wheel drive and is equipped with a powerful in-line motor.

This unit is also equipped with pneumatic casters and has anti-tippers on the wheels. The armrests are height adjustable and can be moved backwards.

3. Merits P182

The Travel Ease P182 from Merits is similar to the P183 in design and features, except for a couple of differences. It has a weight capacity of 600 pounds and weighs 186 pounds. The turning radius on the P182 is much smaller at 26 inches.

4. Shoprider 6Runner 14

The Shoprider 6Runner 14 is a heavy-duty electric wheelchair that is perfect for almost any user. It has a weight capacity of 450 pounds and weighs between 233 to 277 pounds.

The 6Runner 14 has a maximum speed of 3.8 mph, a driving range of 17.5 miles and a turning radius of 23.5 inches.  This unit is a mid-wheel drive system with six points of contact for better stability.

It has a stable four post seating and suspension system for a smooth driving experience. This unit also has a reclining seat, adjustable armrests, as well as easy battery access.
